As I walk up the steps of the Crowne Plaza in Canberra for the beginning of a huge week for the Australian of the Year Awards, there’s an audible buzz coming from the lobby.
For a couple of farmers, it’s immediately clear to my husband and I that we are definitely not in Kansas anymore.
For all 34 state and territory awards recipients, it’s like we’ve been elevated to celebrity status overnight by The National Australia Day Council.
There is someone to assist you at any given moment, private buses take us everywhere we need to go, and there’s even a doctor allocated to the nominees, on call 24/7 if any of us need anything.
